PAST

In the 300+ years since it was founded in Greenwich in the year 1700 the Blue Coat School has moved its site several times. The first school house was in London Street, Greenwich and then a new school house was built in 1753 in Lime Kiln Lane. In 1825 the school moved again to Royal Hill (later Point Hill) and extensions were made to an existing building. In 1959 the school amalgamated with the Blackheath & Kidbrook Church of England School to become Blackheath Bluecoat School on its site in Old Dover Road. Once again extensions were made in 1961 and 1963. In 1973 an extensive new building was erected alongside the old one.

PRESENT

Today the school is housed in the 1911 and 1973 building which is becoming increasing difficult and expensive to maintain. The school was included in phase two of the Building Schools for the Future programme, but the anticipated roll out of this phase has so far not materialised.

FUTURE

Greenwich Council has offered the school the opportunity to move to the Greenwich Peninsula. The project involves the building of a £32 million state of the art school. The governors, with the support of the school senior leadership team, have accepted the offer, subject to a suitable site being agreed, and the school is looking forward with anticipation to beginning this exciting project. It is hoped that the building will be completed for occupation in 2012, during the Olympic year.
